Let us catch you up....
Hey guys! I know, I know... its been way too long. A lot has happened since we last posted about northern Thailand in January 2017. I can't believe it's been a year - it's gone so fast! So here is what we've been up to:
Cambodia - January 2017
I can't believe that in 10 days my mom will be returning to our side of the world to meet us in New Zealand for our Christmas Break! At the end of January last year, we went to Angkor Wat for a long weekend with my mom. During the day we toured every temple we could of possibly made time for, and at night experienced some of the culture and history through performances. The temples were incredible and enchanting. It was like a secret hidden city stuck in time. Every tunnel and arch led to a room that you tried to picture people living and working in. Trees have started to grow over the ruins and uplift the structures. Even though the pictures make the temples look all the same, each one had different features and characteristics that made it unique. My favorite one was a temple made for women that was much shorter than any other temple we saw. Another one you had to walk across a boardwalk over water to get to.
One night we went to a traditional Cambodian dinner and a show. I thought the show was similar to Thai dance shows. The next night we went to the Circus - which is not what your thinking. No animals involved. It was an Art school that performs to raise money for students to go to school for the arts. The story was based on a girl's story surviving the Khmer Rouge through dance and gymnastics. Definitely a highlight of our trip. Lastly, our tour guide was awesome - we found out that he only gets paid one third of the money we paid the hotel to arrange him. He said that if we have friends that come to Cambodia, let us know and then he will get paid all of it since. We have sent 6 different groups of friends to him via facebook! He sends us pictures with our friends each time and I'm glad we are able to help him out.
